Uncoiling the Snake: My Journey Into Kundalini Yoga
Like most of my obsessions, it all started with a Google search.
Specifically:
“Is Kundalini Yoga dangerous?”
What I found was a mix of mysticism, power, and just the right dose of WTF to get me completely hooked. Some people claimed life-changing clarity. Others claimed they lost their minds. One thread even warned about people “going bats**t crazy” from awakening their Kundalini energy too fast — and honestly, that made me more curious.
I kept reading. The more I learned about this mysterious serpent energy coiled at the base of the spine, the more I felt pulled toward it. Not for the psychedelic high. Not to unlock cosmic downloads. But because deep down, I felt like my anxiety, my ego, my energy — all of it — needed a real cleanse.
And I knew I needed to do it right.
Next month, I’ll be starting an intensive one-week Kundalini course with a trained yogi in India, online, for just £88. That’s 1.5 hours a day of guided spiritual, physical, and energetic practice — something I wouldn't dream of doing alone after everything I’ve read.
What is Kundalini Yoga, Really?
Kundalini Yoga is often described as the yoga of awareness. It’s a blend of breathwork (pranayama), movement (asana), chanting (mantra), and meditation designed to awaken your Kundalini energy — an ancient force believed to lie dormant at the base of your spine, like a coiled snake.
When released (carefully and with guidance), this energy rises through your chakras — unlocking inner awareness, emotional release, physical vitality, and ultimately, a connection to a higher consciousness.
But this isn’t your standard vinyasa flow.
Kundalini yoga is intense. It can shake loose blocked trauma, buried emotion, and stagnant energy. Practitioners report everything from surges of joy to sudden tears — and yes, in some cases, psychedelic-like experiences. That’s why it’s so important to go slowly and seek proper guidance — not just hit play on a YouTube video claiming to "awaken you in 5 minutes".
Why I’m Not Looking for a Quick Fix
In a world chasing dopamine hits and 7-second enlightenment, I’m doing the opposite.
This journey isn’t about chasing highs. I don’t want a flood of euphoria followed by confusion. I want to gently unwind the knots in my nervous system, clear my emotional blocks, and reconnect with my body and breath.
Kundalini yoga — if done right — seems to offer just that.
That’s why I’ve booked a real yogi, trained in the traditional lineage, to guide me. £88 might sound like a steal, but when you consider the rupee exchange rate and the years of knowledge my teacher holds, it’s honestly priceless. And this is just the beginning. I want to learn, not just activate.
Kundalini Yoga, Trauma Release & Preparing the Body for IVF
One of the main reasons I’m drawn to Kundalini yoga — beyond the spiritual curiosity — is its powerful potential to help clear trauma and emotional blockages stored in the body.
For many people (especially women navigating fertility journeys), years of stress, anxiety, grief, or physical trauma can lodge in the body in subtle and stubborn ways. The hips, womb space, and heart centre are all considered energetic holding zones for unprocessed emotion — and Kundalini yoga gently works to unlock and move that energy, breath by breath, chant by chant.
But this isn’t just spiritual woo.
Research has shown that practices like Kundalini yoga, meditation, and breathwork can reduce cortisol levels (the stress hormone), improve heart rate variability, and enhance emotional resilience — all of which play a critical role in reproductive health.
Studies on the mind-body connection in fertility suggest that stress reduction and emotional release can improve IVF outcomes, boost hormone regulation, and support implantation. Some IVF specialists now actively recommend yoga, acupuncture, and breath-based therapies as part of a holistic fertility plan.
So for me, this isn’t just about awakening spiritual energy.
It’s about making space — physically, emotionally, and energetically — to welcome new life.
It’s about preparing my body, mind, and soul for IVF, with softness and strength.
It’s about unblocking, releasing, and coming into alignment with who I really am.
Here’s to a New Chapter
So here’s to trying something new next month — not for Instagram, not for instant bliss, but to slowly, steadily release what’s been stuck inside me for years.
No shortcuts. No quick fixes. Just me, my breath, a real teacher, and a willingness to uncoil.
