Beyond the First Steps: The Journey to Parenthood

Parenthood didn't begin the day Forrest was born.

In many ways, it began years earlier, with a diagnosis, difficult decisions, medical appointments, and a determination to keep moving forward when giving up would have been easier.

When people talk about becoming parents, they often focus on the moment a child arrives. What we don't talk about enough are the steps that come before. The setbacks, the uncertainty, the waiting, and the resilience required to keep believing that one day your family will become a reality.

For us, that journey led all the way to Istanbul, Turkey. It involved surgery, IVF, endless research, moments of hope, moments of heartbreak and a refusal to let circumstances decide our future.

This is the story of how we took those first steps towards parenthood, and how they eventually led us to Forrest.

The Road to IVF

Before IVF came into our lives, I was diagnosed with hydrosalpinx, a condition where fluid builds up in the fallopian tubes and can significantly affect fertility.

The diagnosis was difficult to process, but what followed was almost as challenging. Before we could even begin fertility treatment, I had to fight for the surgery I needed. There were delays, frustrations and long periods of uncertainty where it felt as though our lives were on hold.

While friends and family moved forward with their own plans, we found ourselves waiting.

Eventually, after overcoming those obstacles, IVF became our next step.

Anyone who has experienced fertility treatment knows there is no easy route. There are injections, blood tests, scans, medications and endless waiting. Every stage comes with another hurdle, another milestone and another reason to hope.

For us, the answer wasn't in the UK.

After months of research, we chose to travel to Istanbul, Turkey for treatment.

It wasn't a decision we made lightly. We spent countless hours comparing clinics, reading reviews, studying success rates and speaking to people who had already taken the same journey.

Travelling abroad for IVF felt daunting, but it also felt empowering. For the first time in a long time, we felt like we were taking control of our future rather than waiting for someone else to decide it for us.

The History Behind IVF

When people talk about IVF today, it's easy to forget just how revolutionary it once was.

The world's first IVF baby, Louise Brown, was born in 1978. At the time, the achievement was celebrated by many but criticised by others. There were concerns about the ethics of fertility treatment, fears about scientific intervention in reproduction and accusations that doctors were interfering with nature.

Decades later, those debates still exist in some circles.

Yet IVF has now helped millions of children come into the world and has transformed the lives of families across the globe.

The treatment that gave us Forrest exists because of decades of research, innovation and the determination of scientists, doctors and embryologists who refused to give up despite criticism and opposition.

I recently watched Joy, a film based on the story behind the development of IVF. It was a powerful reminder of how much resistance the pioneers of fertility treatment faced and how different life would be for so many families if they had abandoned their work.

More Than Just Medical Treatment

One thing I've learned is that people often misunderstand IVF.

Some see it as a shortcut. Others assume it's a guaranteed solution.

The reality is very different.

IVF is physically demanding, emotionally exhausting and completely unpredictable. Even when everything appears to be going perfectly, there are no guarantees.

Every person going through fertility treatment understands the unique mixture of hope and fear that comes with every appointment, every phone call and every result.

You spend months working towards a single moment and then discover that even then, nothing is certain.

The Science Behind Parenthood

One of the reasons I struggle with the word "miracle" is that it can sometimes overlook the extraordinary science behind IVF.

Everything about our treatment was carefully monitored.

My body was prepared using medication and hormone treatments. I attended scans and appointments to monitor progress. Every measurement, every blood result and every decision made by the medical team was designed to give us the best possible chance of success.

When the time came for egg collection, fertilisation and embryo transfer, every stage relied on highly skilled professionals and decades of scientific advancement.

None of it happened by chance.

That doesn't make Forrest any less special.

If anything, it makes me even more grateful for the people whose expertise helped make his existence possible.

The Stigma That Still Exists

Although IVF is now widely accepted, there are still misconceptions surrounding fertility treatment.

Over the years I've heard comments suggesting IVF is "cheating" or that people should simply accept infertility if pregnancy doesn't happen naturally.

I've even heard people imply that fertility treatment somehow makes a child less wanted or less special.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

Anyone who has experienced infertility knows the emotional, physical and financial cost involved.

IVF is not the easy option.

For many people, it is the only option.

It requires enormous courage, resilience and determination. Every injection, every appointment and every difficult decision is made because of how deeply someone wants to become a parent.

The Moment Everything Changed

After embryo transfer came the infamous two-week wait.

The clinic advised us not to test until we returned to the UK.

That sounded sensible in theory.

In reality, there was absolutely no chance I was waiting that long.

As soon as we had the opportunity, we headed to a local pharmacy and bought pregnancy tests.

I remember being at Luna Park in Tuzla with David. We were supposed to be enjoying ourselves, but all I could think about was testing.

David wouldn't go on the rollercoaster because he was convinced I might already be pregnant.

Eventually I couldn't wait any longer.

I took the test.

Positive.

For a few seconds the world stood still.

Then reality kicked in.

Anyone who has been through IVF knows that fertility medications can sometimes affect early test results. One positive test wasn't enough to convince me.

So I tested again.

And again.

And again.

I still have those tests tucked away somewhere, labelled day by day as the lines became stronger.

Most people probably think that's strange, but I knew those moments would never come again. I couldn't bring myself to throw them away.

Meeting Forrest

From the moment we saw those two lines, everything changed.

Pregnancy after infertility brings a different kind of anxiety. You're excited, but you're also terrified that something could go wrong.

Each scan felt like another small victory.

Each milestone brought a little more confidence.

And then, finally, Forrest arrived.

After everything we had been through, holding him for the first time felt impossible to put into words.

Not because the journey was over.

Because a completely new one was about to begin.

Looking Back

Some people may always see IVF as a miracle.

That's okay.

For me, Forrest represents something different.

He represents what can happen when science, medicine and determination come together.

He represents every appointment we attended, every injection I took, every difficult decision we made and every mile we travelled in pursuit of becoming parents.

Most of all, he represents hope.

If you're currently facing fertility challenges, I want you to know that there are often more options available than you realise.

Your path may not look like ours.

It may not involve Turkey or IVF.

But your story is still being written.

And sometimes the chapter you're struggling through right now is not the end of the story.

It's simply the part where you discover how strong you really are.

Looking back now, I realise that IVF wasn't the destination. It was simply one of the many steps that led us here. Parenthood didn't begin the day Forrest was born, and our story didn't end there either.

Like every family, we're still learning, growing and navigating the journey together.

But every step, every challenge and every difficult decision was worth it, because it led us to the little boy who changed our lives forever.
