The Eyebrow Microblading Journey: A Game Changer for My Face

If you grew up in the 90s or early 2000s, there's a good chance you can relate to this story.

Back then, thin eyebrows weren't just fashionable, they were practically mandatory. The thinner the better. Armed with tweezers and very little foresight, many of us spent our teenage years removing eyebrow hairs with absolute confidence, convinced they would always grow back.

Unfortunately, mine got the memo that retirement had arrived early.

For years, my eyebrows were a constant source of frustration. They were sparse, uneven and required daily attention just to look remotely presentable. Every morning involved filling them in, adjusting the shape and trying to create some sort of symmetry. Some days I got it right. Other days I looked as though I had drawn them on while travelling over speed bumps.

Like many people considering cosmetic treatments, I spent months researching my options.

The Research Phase

I'm not someone who rushes into these things.

Before booking anything, I spent hours scrolling through websites, reading reviews and studying before-and-after photos. Some of the results looked incredible. Others looked like they had been drawn on with a permanent marker and a ruler.

The problem with eyebrows is that they're right in the middle of your face.

A bad haircut eventually grows out.

A questionable outfit can be replaced.

Eyebrows, however, are much harder to ignore.

The thought of waking up every morning with badly shaped brows permanently etched onto my face was enough to make me hesitate.

Despite my frustration, I kept putting off booking an appointment.

The Eyebrow Sticker Era

Before finally taking the plunge, I tried almost every shortcut imaginable.

My lowest point was probably eyebrow transfer stickers.

Yes, those temporary eyebrows that you stick onto your face.

At the time, they seemed like a brilliant solution.

In reality, they were absolutely dreadful.

If you positioned them even slightly wrong, you had to scrub them off and start all over again. Getting both eyebrows level felt like some kind of advanced mathematical challenge.

There were mornings where I genuinely spent more time trying to apply fake eyebrows than I did getting ready for work.

The process was frustrating, time-consuming and far from foolproof.

Eventually I reached the point where I simply couldn't do it anymore.

Something had to change.

Taking the Leap

After months of research, I finally found a microblading artist whose work I loved.

Even better, she was local.

I spent hours looking through her portfolio, zooming in on photographs and reassuring myself that these brows actually looked natural.

Booking the appointment felt surprisingly nerve-wracking.

As much as I hated my existing eyebrows, there was still a part of me thinking, "What if I hate the result?"

But I also knew that if I didn't do something, I'd still be drawing on eyebrows every morning for the foreseeable future.

Eventually I booked.

And then immediately started questioning my life choices.

The Procedure

One of the questions people ask most often is whether microblading hurts.

Honestly?

Not really.

It wasn't pleasant, but it wasn't painful either.

The best way I can describe it is a strange scratching sensation. You know something is happening, but it's not unbearable.

The sound was actually the weirdest part.

You can hear the tiny strokes being made, and for some reason that was far stranger than the sensation itself.

The treatment involved creating small hair-like strokes within my natural brow area to build shape, definition and fullness.

I had my initial appointment followed by a touch-up session six weeks later, which is a normal part of the process.

The touch-up allows any areas that didn't retain pigment perfectly to be adjusted and refined.

The Healing Process

Immediately after treatment, your brows can look quite bold.

This is completely normal.

For a few days I looked in the mirror and wondered if I'd accidentally become an extra in a historical drama.

Fortunately, the colour softens significantly as the skin heals.

Over the following weeks, the pigment settled and the brows became much more natural-looking.

Patience is definitely required during the healing phase.

What you see on day one isn't the final result.

The Difference It Made

The biggest surprise wasn't how my eyebrows looked.

It was how much easier life became.

For years, I had accepted filling in my eyebrows as part of my daily routine.

I didn't realise how much time and mental energy I was spending on them until I didn't have to anymore.

Now I can leave the house without makeup and still feel put together.

I can go swimming without worrying that one eyebrow might disappear before the other.

I can wake up looking like myself rather than a work in progress.

It's a small change, but it made a surprisingly big difference to my confidence.

Was It Worth It?

Absolutely.

Even though I still have days where my skin decides to remind me that adult acne is very much a thing, having defined brows instantly makes me feel more polished.

They frame the face, make you look more awake and remove one less thing from the morning to-do list.

For me, the convenience alone has made it worthwhile.

My Advice

If you're considering microblading, don't rush.

Take your time researching artists. Look at healed results, not just fresh ones. Read reviews. Ask questions. Make sure you genuinely love the style of the person you're booking with.

The quality of the artist matters far more than finding the cheapest option.

Microblading is one of those treatments where doing your homework pays off.

For those of us who survived the over-plucking era, it can genuinely feel like getting a second chance at eyebrows.

And trust me, after years of battling sparse brows, that's a wonderful thing.
